How to join Bygrave Croquet Club
Bygrave Croquet Club was founded last year by Duncan Hector who lives at the Moat House. He says ..........
"I was introduced to croquet about 60 years ago when I lived at the Old Rectory in Bygrave. For some years we played our version of croquet on the old grass tennis court which is now a swimming pool. Later on we used the croquet mallets for bicycle polo which proved to be quite a dangerous game!
I took up croquet seriously in 1987 when the Croquet Association helped to found a new club in Letchworth, I was elected as Chairman and along with a very supportive committee we managed to develop a thriving little club. Today Letchworth has two of the finest croquet lawns in the UK and a membership of over 80 members. During most of that period Croquet has been my obsession and at best I was ranked at around 28 in the UK - now I have slipped to 60 but hopefully that will improve. I have played for Great Britain (although I think I was selected to weaken our team) and have played in the British Open several times. I have been a member of the Hertfordshire County team for some years and prior to that played for Essex. I was introduced to this fantastic game by playing Garden Croquet. It is a game that can be played in virtually any garden by people of all ages - it is a game for life! Now I want to put something back into the game and ideally get villages playing croquet, then we can have village croquet matches and get the game growing village to village, town to town."
There are two categories of membership. Garden Croquet member or Association Croquet member - please see the "Membership Page" for details. If you are interested in joining please submit an application using the form below or phone Duncan on 01462 892638. Bygrave is a wonderful place to learn croquet, it is very much "on the job" learning. There is a huge amount of knowledge and experience available to you. Beginners get a short introduction lasting no more than 10 minutes and then start playing. Additional coaching is provided each week in very short bursts so you will never get bored.
We also provide coaching and for those interested in competitive play, we teach Association Croquet and are keen to attract people who would like to play for the club in official events. One of our Bygrave beginners already has an official handicap, has represented Bygrave at Soham in the winter indoor series and in the regional league for "Melgrave" which is a combination of Bygrave and Meldreth Clubs.
We meet on Friday afternoons starting at 2.30pm.
