Spencer Ell Cup 2011
The format
"Eights week" is a major fixture in the Croquet Association calendar and takes place in September each year. An "Eight" is a tournament for eight people in which "all play all" twice. There are four "Eights" played simultaneously during the week at four different locations. Anyone who wants to enter can do so by submitting an application the the Croquet Association. The Selectors then decide who plays in each Eight. The strongest play for the President's Cup, the next strongest eight play for the Chairman's Cup, then the Spencer Ell Cup and lastly the Treasurer's Tankard. This year the Spencer Ell was held at Ryde on the Isle of Wight and due to late withdrawals from the higher Eights Graham Gale and Duncan Hector were promoted to the Spencer Ell from the Treasurer's and could therefore be considered as outsiders. In the event Martin Murray won but Graham and Duncan shared 2nd place which might be a first for promoted players!
The video
This video is a cameo of the event. It is very difficult to make a video of a tournament in which you are competing - filming can only be done when you are not playing and it is impossible to film yourself (thankfully). So the footage tends to be snatched at times when the sun is out and you try to can catch something other than boring break play! I hope you enjoy this video - I have had fun with the editing suite and introduced a few stingers and effects to make it a bit more dynamic.
I am often asked about the music.
The music
As with all video production the music must be copyright free unless you pay a license fee or are happy to have Adverts popping up on your You Tube viewer. For this reason I use a music generation system that uses modular live music to create whatever length of track I require. Oddly enough I have been challenged several times by You Tube who seem to have a scanning system that tries to establish if copyright music is being used. It doesn't seem to work very well because, in my case, they are always proved wrong.
The video player
Although I will be uploading this to my channel on You Tube, I have started using an unbranded Flash player which means that you can watch the video and when it finishes you remain on this website instead of on the You Tube site. If you want to play the video full screen (at lower resolution) click on the arrows located bottom right on the player.

Reg Bamford - Men's Championships Hurlingham 2004
This series of 4 parts features World No 1 Reg Bamford in the final of the Men's Championships 2004. The video covers the whole game right from the beginning in which Peter Trimmer starts with a supershot opening. This is of particular interest because Reg completes a Sextuple. This means that he not only ran all twelve hoops but peeled his partner ball through its last 6 hoops and then pegged both balls out - this won him the Championships. He completed no fewer than 7 sextuples in this event alone.

_This 26 minute film features Tom making a hoop Robert making his 12th successive TP iin Championship play which was part of his record breaking run of 19 TPs. Unfortunately the camera battery became an issue and not all hoop runs are on the film but all the peels are. Robert made a clever promotional canon at corner 4, a long peel at 4 back ( which took several minutes off camera), a missed peel at penult -the rest of the game was reliable Fulford at play!
